Key Stats for the Europa League

Europa League matches see on average 2.6 goals during the group stages and close to 2.8 at the beginning of finals. Saying that, in 2013/2014, only 2.35 goals were scored on average in the 12 groups in the Europa League. These relatively low stats can be explained by the numerous unknown small teams from the championships. Often grouped defensively, these "outsiders" logically compete in what can be described as closed meetings against the more renowned clubs. Therefore ensure to carefully monitor the course of these small groups from the preliminary rounds of the competition.

Since 2010 at least half semi-finalist (12/24) come from the championship league, best 3rd place.

Successful Betting on the Europa League

The group stages in the Europa League are hard fought however often we witness low quality games at the end of the competition. Generally speaking betting on the "under 2.5 goals" during the group are interesting markets , providing that there isn't a substantial level difference in the teams or a team is under pressure to produce a win.

Instead, we wait until the knockout matches where lots of goals are likely to be generated! The statistics prove it: these confrontations for both legs usually see three goals per game! As we approach the end of the competition, the more we see the powerful teams align to their team types. This is more so the case during home matches where the teams are driven by their fans, like we witnessed during the incredible Liverpool v Dortmund game last season.

So, you shouldn't hesitate on putting your faith on these larger, well-known clubs in this championship.. The competition has become even more attractive in comparison to the past and there are fewer teams who will not compete at 100%.

The "Under 2.5 Goals" markets, amongst "low" level team stand out and can be a good earner. Unless there is an excessive level gap - in which case wagering on the number of goals could be a dangerous bet as it will then all depend on the players motivation from these bigger clubs - however, it is not uncommon to witness a closed meetings which ends in drawless 0-0 game. What we're likely to see is a single goal scored on a defensive mistake or a set piece.

Put your faith in clubs in the Spanish, Portuguese and even the clubs from the East! Since 2004, the Europa League has been won 8 times by a Spanish club, and Portuguese clubs have been finalists 5 times! Therefore, it comes as no surprise that Portugal is neck and neck with France in the UEFA rankings. Unlike many of the Italian, English, French, Spanish and Portuguese clubs, do not hesitate to wager on this competition!

If the Europa League has this undesirable reputation, there are a several reasons behind it: not all clubs like the idea of playing for the Europa League, often referred to as the sister championship, and as a result a lack of motivation, strength or ambition. Some destinations that could be describe as "dicey" also trouble some clubs where they tend to send either young players or substitutes for these types of games. We have seen in the past with certain big guns (Lazio 0-3 Sparta Prague, Fenerbahce Braga 4-1, Dortmund 0-1 PAOK examples from last season) left dazed by these lower level teams!

Presenting The Competition

The Europa League - formerly the UEFA Cup - is the second-biggest European football competition. Created in 1971, it currently involves 48 clubs that have mostly finished near the top of their national championships or won a national trophy.

Scorned for many years due to its lack of sporting and financial interest, the UEFA Cup - renamed the Europa League at the start of 2009 - has managed to successfully renew its format over the years and now puts on an impressive show starting at the last 16 stage.

Furthermore, the eight clubs that finish in 3rd place of their Champions' League group are automatically integrated into the final stage, played as two-legged return matches (32 teams). This measure has further increased the appeal of a Europa League that is starting to emerge from the shadow of its big sister.

Winners of the Europa League - all the prestigious teams (Chelsea 2013, Atletico Madrid x2 (2010, 2012), Porto 2011, etc.) confirm that the competition has indeed entered a new era.

Each year, the winner starts the new season by taking on the winner of the Champions' League in the prestigious European Super Cup.

It is worth noting that last season, Sevilla is entered deeper into this legendary of European competition lifting a third consecutive trophy. A surprising success since the Spaniards began their international campaign in the Champions League before shifting into the sister championship.
