Key stats on the Championship

Championship sides played a total of 552 matches this season and a total of 1441 goals were scored with 2.61 goals per game on average. Injuries, suspensions and fatigue are quite the norm come the Christmas period with the additions of the League and FA Cups..

Betting on the Championship

Due to the amount of teams in the Championship, league positions can change dramatically. For instance a team can be sitting in 10th but with a win could shoot up to the Play-Off places, particularly around January. Also worth noting, the score line of 1-0 is the most common in the Championship.

Invariably the top teams perform consistently at home therefore interesting odds are normally hard to find. Away matches between closely matched teams bring up more interesting odds similar to the Premiership.

Champions last year and play-offs

Newcaslte were crowned as worthy champions last year with Rafa Beniteze. Newcastle were very convincing all season and manage to win the leage behind Brighton & Hove Albion. Brighton missed out on the top spot but that didnt mind them as they were were promoted anyway. Reading, Sheffield Wednesday, Huddersfield Town and Fulham battled it out in the playoffs to reach the Premier Leage. It was Huddersfield Town that claimed victory and they go up to the top league with Newcastle and Brighton. Chris Wood was the top goal scorer from Leeds United with 27 goals but missed out on the playoffs.

Championship guide

The Championship is Britain’s 2nd most popular league after the Premier League. The top two teams at the end of a season gain automatic qualification to Britain’s best league. In addition, play-offs are played between the teams that finish 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th place. The Semi finals are played over two legs whilst the Final is played at Wembley. The promotion from that play-off final is seen as more lucrative than automatic promotion due to TV Rights and the build up to the final at Wembley. In addition teams that are relegated to the Championship from the Premiership are known to have a ‘Premiership parachute’. This refers to the revenue gained from TV rights in the top league as well as increased sales from stadium tickets, season tickets, shirts sales etc. Thus a pattern is revealed: relatively often the same teams can be found to be going down from and going up to the Premier League. This includes teams Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Hull. Teams between the 22nd and 24th place are relegated every season.
